Facial moisturisers

Do you need a moisturiser? It depends on your skin. What kind of skin do you have?

  1. Oily/acne-prone

Symptoms: Your skin (especially your T-zone) gets seriously shiny within a couple of hours of washing your face, and you're predisposed to pimples.Remedy: If you don't need it, skip the moisturiser. If you use one, try an oil-absorbing formula.

Sensitive

Symptoms: Your skin can be cranky and quite temperamental - nearly everything you slather on makes your face sting, burn or break out.Remedy: Look for softeners formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid those containing fragrance or sunscreen. They can irritate delicate skin.

  • Normal

Symptoms: Your skin has a well-balanced disposition - it's neither dry nor oily, you rarely break out and your skin texture is even.Remedy: Choose a lightweight, quick-absorbing lotion with built-in sun protection.

  • Dry

Symptoms: Your skin feels tight, looks parched and has chronic scales and flakes; it sometimes gets pink and tender after you lather up.Remedy: Try rich, thick cream that comes in a tub. Steer clear of products that contain fragrance, alpha hydroxy acids, alcohol and propylene glycol as they all tend to irritate dry skin.

  • Combination

Symptoms: Your skin has a split personality - your cheeks are dry and flaky, but your T-zone gets oily a few hours after you wash your face.Remedy: You have two options - dab a bit of lightweight moisturiser on just the dry spots or use a product specially formulated for combination skin.

  • Uneven

Symptoms: Your face has red brown acne scars, which give it a blotchy appearance.Remedy: Use a moisturiser packed with exfoliants such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids, retinoids, salicylic, glycolic or lactic acids. This will help slough off dead skin cells.
