The weeks before prom can be crazy. There’s nothing better than planning your dress, shoes, prom makeup and hair. To make things easier, we’ve compiled the five prom makeup musts for this year’s event. If you live by these prom makeup tips, we guarantee you won’t look weird, boring or too much like your regular, everyday self for this year’s prom.

Prom night figures as a big event in most teen lives. There’s nothing better than planning your dress, shoes, makeup and hair. Be sure to practice a few days before Prom or print out your favorite look and take it to a makeup counter for expert application.

What is the most important event of the year for a high-school junior or senior? That’s right! It’s the PROM. The pictures you have from this momentous occasion will repeatedly remind you how of beautiful you were at 17 or 18. These will be memories you will talk and think about your whole life. You’ll want to look your most beautiful, and with expert advice from a professional cosmetics expert, you can turn flaws into assets and an everyday look into a high-fashion or soft-evening look.

On prom night, you will want to create a glamorous, out-of-the ordinary look with your make-up. Still, it is important to have a good normal base of makeup to work with so you don’t end up looking too made up or not at all like yourself. The key to prom beauty is to look like yourself with a little added glamour. When doing your makeup before the prom (which we suggest doing yourself you will end up with a more natural look and a little more money in your purse), apply a base of makeup following the suggestions below:

The biggest mistake people make when putting on makeup is that they highlight both the eye and the mouth. You need to pick one or the other and downplay what you rejected.

The first look is very simple and girly and very natural for girls who don’t want to look overdone. A little bit of lipstick, makeup some lip glass, soft glowing pink or natural cheeks, a little bit of mascara and you’re done.

Choose a very light foundation, powder and blush. You really don’t want your prom makeup to look as though it has been caked on.

Avoid over cleansing too close the the actual night, as that tends to irritate the skin and produce a red rough appearance. A couple of days before, only employ a mild facial cleanser twice daily, to keep face clean and fresh.

Choose a very natural shade of lipstick or lip gloss. It does not need to match your prom dress, not does it need to be overly dramatic. You will probably want to go very natural when it comes to all of your prom makeup.

When picking prom make-up, go bold. If you want to play up your eyes, use liner, shadow, mascara, and false eyelashes. This would be a perfect time to give the smokey eye a try. Look at my previous post for how to’s on this technique. You may also want to try and match your eye makeup with your prom dress, go for shimmery eye shadows. Which ever way you choose to play up those eyes, make sure you play down your lips. Use a soft color with gloss for your lips. If lips are what you want to show, then go for bright colors that look nice with your dress and go simple with your eye make-up.

If you’re doing your eyes dramatic, use a lighter color on your lips. Try a natural lip liner color and blend into lips with finger or lipbrush. Then apply a high-shine gloss for lots of shimmer! Not doing much with makeup for prom? Try a plum colored lip liner and blend with finger or lipbrush. Then, apply a close colored lip stick and blot. Apply a high-shine gloss to center of bottom lip and voila… your lips are HOT!
