If sunscreen is so dangerous, then why do doctors highly recommend its daily use? Perhaps because doctors are as easily influence by commercial interests as the rest of the general population and can be readily convinced to recommend practically any product, no matter how toxic, unhealthy or deadly to consumers. It wasn’t that long ago when doctors where highly recommending HRT, Vioxx, and countless other pharmaceuticals that later proved to sunscreen cause cancer and/or death. Most chemical sunscreens contain from 2 to 5% of benzophenone or its derivatives (oxybenzone, benzophenone-3) as their active ingredient. Benzophenone is one of the most powerful free radical generators known to man. It is used in industrial processes to initiate chemical reactions and promote cross-linking(15). Benzophenone is activated by ultraviolet light. The absorbed energy breaks benzophenone’s double bond to produce two free radical sites. The free radicals desperately look for a hydrogen atom to make them “feel whole again”. They may find this hydrogen atom among the other ingredients of the sunscreen, but it is conceivable that they could also find it on the surface of the skin and thereby initiate a chain reaction which could ultimately lead to melanoma and other skin cancers.
One might find it a little strange that an organization as stringent as it would like people to believe such as the FDA would not publish firmly established safety guidelines for sunscreens and sunblock products for nearly thirty years. It might seem even stranger that the FDA hasn’t published regulations of any kind of sunscreens, considering that many of the ingredients used in them are dangerous chemicals, known to be environmental hazards, cancer-causing (carcinogenic), and disruptive to the endocrine system of the body, particularly sex hormones.
The skin easily absorbs chemicals
But many substances go through your skin other than water. This simple fact was denied for many years by proponents of conventional medicine, who said the skin was some sort of barrier. This was before they figured out that they could use the skin to deliver drugs; now we have patch delivery systems for nicotine, birth control, and even Alzheimer’s patches that actually deliver a measured dose of drugs through the skin.
It’s not something that the makers of sunscreen lotions might want you to know, but sunscreen apparently does not protect against skin cancers. A comprehensive review of ten studies has convinced researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York that sunscreen is ineffective in stopping skin tumors. More surprising, five of the studies found that those who use sunscreen have an increased risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Why UVA And UVB Protection Is Critical
Most healthcare professionals will agree that the proven benefits of UVA and UVB protection are far greater than the speculated risks of using sunscreens. We may not know for certain whether sunscreens lead to cancer (though it seems unlikely); we do know about the damaging effects that UVA and UVB rays have upon our skin and bodies. Both can lead to the development of skin cancer. The longer UVA rays can also lead to signs of accelerated aging such as wrinkles, leathery and sagging skin.
Sun protection factor
The SPF of a sunscreen is a laboratory measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen; the higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UV-B (the ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn). The SPF indicates the time a person can be exposed to sunlight before getting sunburn with a sunscreen applied relative to the time they can be exposed without sunscreen.
